The Essex Library Association was established in 1889, and The Friends of the Library was finally organized in 1978, after several attempts since the turn of the century. Four enterprising women, Joan Duys, Ginnie Freeman, Dodie Harris, and Jeanne Byrne organized a group of volunteers who raised funds for much-needed equipment and who mended book covers or shelved returned books or helped at the circulation desk. Annual book sales soon became a much anticipated event and the principal fundraiser for the Friends.
By its 100th birthday, the Essex Library Association relied on the Friends for core volunteers and the source funds for special equipment. Today, the Friends organization continues in this critical role and is a major source of non-operating funds. The Friends volunteers remain important for assisting the staff with everyday needs.
The Friends generates funds from the Annual Membership Appeal, book sales in the fall and spring, and special fundraising events. In 2006, the Friends purchased computer hardware, an LCD/digital projector used in the Foreign Films Program, and reference materials, as well as sponsored a number of programs for community enjoyment.
